Multicultural and Diversity Committee and Women in Psychiatry Committee

The Multicultural and Diversity Committee and the Women in Psychiatry Committee are excited to announce a panel event: “Women in Psychiatry: At the Intersection of Hope, Healing, and Hard Work“. We welcome you to join us virtually on June 9th, from 7:00-8:15. Destiny Pegram, PGY 4 and Brandon Newsome MIT co-chairs of the Multicultural and Diversity Committee, will moderate a panel discussion among Drs. Mary Ahn, Kayla Behbahani, and Donna Norris about their experiences. 

 

Mary Ahn, M.D. is Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs across the three schools (School of Medicine, Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences and Graduate School of Nursing) of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She maintains a practice of Child and Adult Psychiatry, and is also a credentialed Executive and Career Coach, helping biomedical science and medical professionals navigate the challenging path of career development while achieving balance in life.

 

Kayla Behbahani, D.O. is an attending Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Before becoming a psychiatrist, she worked as a television news journalist. In addition to her clinical work, she is Director of Media and Communications in the Department of Psychiatry at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She is also a contributing author to a book about patients living with bipolar disorder scheduled to publish later this year, and is active in the field of workplace violence prevention.

 

Donna M. Norris, M.D. is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, is a member of the Psychiatry and the Law Program at BIDMC, and maintains a practice of Child, Adult, and Forensic Psychiatry. She has had a long and distinguished career as a clinician, a leader, and an advocate for our patients and our profession. She has held many academic, educational, board, and gubernatorial posts, and has received numerous awards from multiple organizations, including the Women of Courage and Conviction Award from the National Council of Negro Women, and the Solomon Carter Fuller Award and The Jeanne M. Spurlock, M.D. Social Justice Award, both from the APA.  She is a past president of the MPS and a past Secretary-Treasurer of the APA. A pioneer, Dr. Norris was the first woman and first African American woman Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the APA. She is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the APA, as well as a recipient of the Outstanding Psychiatrist Award for the Advancement of the Profession from MPS.
